Why I love Hope

Steve appreciates Hope’s high academic standards and its bright, hard-working students. He enjoys his friendly colleagues who are dedicated scholars and creative teachers, an ethos that combines a commitment to excellence in teaching with a strong emphasis on first-rate research, a caring college community located in a big small town and a robustly Christian college that takes its mission statement seriously and tries to welcome everyone.

Outside the college

Steve’s wife, Celaine, is a marriage and family therapist, a spiritual director and an ordained minister in the Reformed Church in America. They have three girls: Anna lives in Brooklyn, New York, Chara is a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay and Sophia is a recent Spanish major graduate of Hope. He and his wife live with their lively Boston Terrier, Lily, in a 125-year-old home surrounded by trees in downtown Holland.

Steve spends as much time as possible outside, including taking students whitewater rafting, flatwater canoeing and backpacking in the Adirondacks every May as part of a three-week Hope course, Ecological Theology and Ethics.
