2022 HOPEYs Award Recipients Announced

TEAM AWARDS

Outstanding Team

Presented to the team deemed to be the most outstanding in a given year, finishing in the top 10 of the NCAA Division III within their respective sport.

Recipient: Women's Basketball.The 1st-ranked Flying Dutch capped off their season with a 71-58 win over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, earning them their third national championship win in team history. The team finished with a 32-1 overall record, with a 15-1 MIAA record that earned them a share of the MIAA regular season championship and the MIAA Tournament Title. Three Hope players earned All-MIAA honors while Kenedy Schoonveld was named the MIAA MVP for the third consecutive season and Olivia Voskuil earned her fourth MIAA Defensive Player of the Year award. Sydney Muller was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division III Tournament and Kenedy Schoonveld was chosen as WBCA and D3hoops Player of the Year.

Comeback Performance of the Year

Presented to the team that had the most memorable come-from-behind win.

Recipient: Volleyball vs. Calvin. The Flying Dutch had a dramatic come-from-behind, five-set win against fourth-ranked Calvin. After winning the first set, Hope dropped sets two and three forcing a must-win situation in set four to keep the match alive. During the fourth set, the Flying Dutch rallied by scoring 12 of the final 18 points, including the final five. In the fifth set, Hope seized command by scoring seven of the last nine points. With this victory, the Flying Dutch won the MIAA regular-season title.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Male Be Strong, Be True. Athlete of the Year

Presented to a junior or senior who demonstrates the true essence of being a student-athlete and embodies the Division III motto of Discover, Develop, Dedicate. This student-athlete is in high academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.5), plays a significant role on the team, and is involved in the Hope and Holland community.

Recipient:Jack Radzville, Men's Lacrosse -Radzville is a senior Engineering major. During 2021, he set career-highs in goals scored with 56 and assists at 48. He became the first single-season 100-point scorer for the Flying Dutchmen. Radzville was named to the All-MIAA First Team and received the MIAA MVP in men's lacrosse. Additionally, he was an All-Region Second Team selection by the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association and named an Honorable Mention All-American by the United States Lacrosse Association. Radzville has been integral to the team's efforts with 'It's On Us' and 'OneLove' to stand up against domestic violence and sexual assult. He also helped organize a fundraiser in partnership with The Hope Street Foundation where players shaved their heads to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

Recipient: Arinn King, Softball. King is a senior majoring in Kinesiology. She played in all 36 games during the 2021 season and finished the year with a .317 batting average. On the year, King had a team-leading six home runs and 14 doubles. Additionally, she has led the team in doubles every year of her career. King has served as an R.A. on campus and as a TA for both Anatomy and Biomechanics classes. She participated in a SEED trip to Zambia and now serves on the Hope Athletics Ministry Team. King also helps lead the softball team Bible study.

Male Athlete of the Year

Presented to the male athlete deemed to be the most exceptional during the year.

Recipient: Evan Maday, Baseball. During the 2021 season, Maday hit a team-leading .360 while starting all 40 games for the Flying Dutchmen. He recorded career-highs in home runs with eight, runs batted in with 38, and runs scored with 42. Maday also swiped a school-record 38 stolen bases in 42 attempts during the season. He is now the career stolen base leader for Hope with 80 steals in 91 attempts. Defensively, Maday excelled as well in center field with a 1.000 fielding percentage. In 117 chances, he collected 114 putouts and three assists. Maday earned All-MIAA First Team honors and was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Mideast All-Region Second Team.

Female Athlete of the Year

Presented to the female athlete deemed to be the most exceptional during the year.

Recipient: Kenedy Schoonveld, Women's Basketball.Schoonveld averaged 11.1 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.6 steals per game over 33 games this season. She was named to the All-MIAA First Team for the fifth consecutive season and won the MIAA MVP in women's basketball for the third consecutive season. Schoonveld was recognized as an All-American by D3hoops and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). She was also named the Player of the Year by D3hoops and the WBCA. Schoonveld won the Jostens Trophy in 2022 which is given to the most outstanding Division III basketball player of the year. She played a key role in the success of the team that was crowned the NCAA Division III National Champion.

Male Anchor Award

Presented to an athlete who anchors the team, inspiring their teammates to train and perform at their best.

Recipient: Brady Swinehart, Men's Basketball. Swinehart was always the first one to practice and came with a great work ethic. He embraced his role at practice to be the other team's best guard and would give the Flying Dutchmen the best look from a scouting perspective. Swinehart demonstrated a level of enthusiasm that inspired the entire team culture.

Female Anchor Award

Presented to an athlete who anchors the team, inspiring their teammates to train and perform at their best.

Recipient: Hannah Smith, Women's Basketball. Smith consistently serves and puts the team first, both on and off the court. On the court, Smith brings the energy and is the leader of the "chaos crew" - a term dubbed to the bench players who would sub in and cause chaos with their aggressive defense and fast paced offense. Off the court, she is the first to stand up for a teammate and support them when they are in need. She put her whole heart and soul into the program and has been an anchor for the Flying Dutch.

Male Comeback Player of the Year

Presented to an athlete who has re-emerged on the field of play after overcoming adversity in the previous season due to an injury, illness, or personal hardship.

Recipient: Bailey Smith, Men's Swim & Dive. During the past off-season, Smith needed shoulder surgery to repair a tear in his labrum. He was unable to return to regular workouts until halfway through the season this year. At the 2022 MIAA Championships Smith was a member of the 800-yard Freestyle Relay that broke a Hope College record. He also swam an NCAA Championship preliminary qualifying time in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Smith was named to the All-MIAA Team.

Female Comeback Player of the Year

Presented to an athlete who has re-emerged on the field of play after overcoming adversity in the previous season due to an injury, illness, or personal hardship.

Recipient: Isabelle Bertolone, Women's Soccer.As a senior, Bertolone broke her finger in the first scrimmage of the season this fall and was out until October. Soon after her return, she was starting for the Flying Dutch in goal. Bertolone finished the season with three wins and a tie. She stopped three penalty kicks in the MIAA Semifinal Tournament Game to help advance the team to the MIAA Championship where they would go on to win and earn a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Male Breakthrough Athlete of the Year

Presented to an athlete (sophomore and above) that has made the best or most significant breakthrough in their sport during the year.

Recipient:Dan Romano, Football -After seeing limited playing time during his freshman season and having his sophomore year canceled due to COVID-19, Romano had a breakthrough year in 2021. As a running back, he rushed for 832 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. He was named to the D3Football Team of the Week when he rushed for 244 yards against Adrian and earned All-MIAA Second Team honors.

Female Breakthrough Athlete of the Year

Presented to an athlete (sophomore and above) that has made the best or most significant breakthrough in their sport during the year.

Presented to the freshman or transfer that made a significant impact within their sport during their first year on the team.

Female Newcomer of the Year

Presented to the freshman or transfer that made a significant impact within their sport during their first year on the team.

Recipient: Sara Kraus, Women's Swimming & Diving. Kraus won three individual events and was a part of two winning relays at the MIAA Swimming & Diving Championships as a freshman. She was named the MIAA MVP and earned All-MIAA Honors. Kraus set five school records (two individual and three relays). At the NCAA Division III Championships, she earned All-American honors in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke and All-American Honorable Mention honors in the 200-yard IM and 200-yard Medley Relay.

Karen Page Courage Award

Presented in honor of beloved former Hope women's tennis coach Karen Page, who lost her brave, five-year battle to breast cancer in the summer of 2009.

Recipient:Leigh Sears, women's soccer head coach and cancer survivor

Hope for Humanity Award

Presented to Hope College alumni athletes that have demonstrated Christian commitment and service to others in their careers after Hope.

Recipient: Elly Douglass '04 Jordan

Norman Japinga "Bunko" Service Award

Presented to Hope College faculty or staff members who are connected to Hope Athletics and recognized for their contributions that go above and beyond what is expected. The award is in honor of Norman "Bunko" Japinga, who passed away in the fall of 2018 and left behind a legacy of service within our athletic program. It is voted on by Hope student-athletes.

Recipient: Scott VanderStoep, Dean of Social Sciences

Meritorious Service Award

Recipient: Eva Dean Folkert, former co-Director of Athletics
