Degree Programs

The neuroscience program offers an interdisciplinary major or minor, weaving together courses in biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, nursing, philosophy and psychology.

Neuroscience Major

The program consists of 63–67 credit hours and will allow you to be broadly trained in the foundation disciplines of biology, psychology, chemistry and statistics while also providing depth in training at multiple levels of neuroscience in fourneuroscience courses:

  • Introduction to Neuroscience
  • Neurochemistry and Neuropharmacology
  • Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology
  • Cognitive Psychology/Neuroscience

You will then have the opportunity to tailor your major by selecting the most appropriate:

  • Cognate courses in computer science, engineering, physics and philosophyand
  • Upper level biology or psychology courses, which best suit your specific career goals

Finally, you will apply this new knowledge to novel problems in neuroscience in a collaborative research capstone experience in your junior or senior year.

Program Outcomes

Hope College students completing a Neuroscience degree will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles that contribute to neuroscience and apply this knowledge in an integrative fashion to novel problems and questions in the field
  • Synthesize and differentiate among the various disciplines which contribute to the field of neuroscience
  • Critically evaluate the primary neuroscience literature
  • Collaboratively contribute to new knowledge in the field of neuroscience through hypothesis development, experimental design, data collection and data
  • Create and deliver effective written, visual, and oral communication designed for both scientific and non-scientific audiences.

Neuroscience Minor

Like the neuroscience major, the neuroscience minor program at Hope College is founded on one of its greatest strengths: its research program. Our program promotes the process of discovery and inquiry-based learning. The minor consists of a total of 23 credit hours, combining three core neuroscience courses with flagged courses from multiple disciplines. We strongly encourage you to make this minor your own.
